A major activity started in 2009 is our Literacy Project in Cambodia (or project website), as part of a program of re-connection with the local and international community. The worldwide Rotary CLE Literacy program had its origins in the RC Salisbury with the efforts of Dick Walker in 1985. Eight of our members visited Thailand and Cambodia in October to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of our sister club Bangrak in Thailand and visited the three primary schools in Cambodia where the new literacy program is being established. Here is a map of the trip. The literacy project continues to flourish and they are now on their second “book”.
In October 2009 we also started the new Sunnybank Rotaract Club in the area with the help of 2 other Rotary Clubs and the other Brisbane Rotaract Clubs. The Club is now Chartered and will celebrate that on August 14 2010. There is a Website and Facebook site and overwhelming interest, so they now have a president and committee and are already planning activities and their official charter in mid 2010. We also helped Nyanda High School establish an Interact Cl.ub and celebrated their charter on May 15 2010. Chris Miranda has been the inspiration behind these efforts.
Our Pride of Workmanship evenings have been successful the last two years. The 2010 evening is on Wednesday, September 22
Two new activities are our Rotary Legends as Guest Speakers and an International Toast to other Rotary Clubs organised by Wendy Pola
